The DML500 is a bending wave panel rather than a cone speaker. A stiff carbon fiber and Nomex honeycomb panel is driven by four neodymium motors, and thousands of small vibrational modes spread across it at once, so the sound leaves as a diffuse wavefront rather than as a beam. Coverage is 165 degrees horizontally and 165 degrees vertically, out of an enclosure thin enough to sit against a wall. A conventional cabinet throws a narrow vertical pattern, so people standing get a different sound from people seated. The panel covers both at once, which is why a room where guests are moving around sounds the same from every spot.
Hung in a line array configuration, several panels work as one tall source. Every private event has a moment where somebody talks: a host, a producer introducing a record, an artist thanking a room. We bring Shure wireless handhelds and lapel microphones, and they run through our AI-powered De-Feedback system, which finds and holds down the frequency that is about to ring before it becomes a squeal. That matters more in a luxury venue than in a ballroom, because the marble and glass that make the room look expensive are the same surfaces that make it ring.
The panels help here before the De-Feedback system does anything. A flat panel radiates diffusely instead of aiming a lobe of energy back down the room at an open microphone, so the rig starts with a lot of gain before feedback, and the De-Feedback system takes care of what is left. Between the two the system is feedback resistant enough that the room is ready as placed, with the ringing out already done by the system.
We put fresh batteries in on our own schedule, and we set the level for every microphone with a person standing where the speaker will stand.
