CO2 cannons and guns: a white plume

A burst of liquid CO2 leaves the nozzle and flashes into a column of white vapor that shoots overhead and vanishes in a few seconds. It is cold rather than hot, it leaves the floor dry, and it lands on a beat. This is the one effect that lives on this page alone, so it gets the long version further down.

Cold sparks: silver fountains

Cold spark machines throw a fountain of silver sparks several feet into the air from a granule that burns far cooler than traditional pyrotechnics. Guests read it as fireworks indoors. It is the effect people mean when they say sparklers for the first dance. It is also the one effect here that has to be permitted and run by a licensed pyrotechnician, so it needs the longest lead time of anything on this page.

Lasers: beams across the room

Lasers draw sharp beams and shapes through the air and can sweep an entire ballroom from one position. They want something in the air to be visible at all, which is why lasers and haze get quoted together. Aiming and safety zones are set during load in and held all night.

Fog and haze: air you can see light in

Haze is a thin, even suspension that makes every beam in the room read as a solid shaft of light. High density fog is the opposite job: a heavy burst behind a doorway for a silhouette entrance, gone within a minute. Both machines are covered in full on their own page.

Dancing on the clouds: a cloud on the floor

Low-lying fog stays at ankle height instead of rising, so a couple appears to be standing on a cloud while their faces stay clear for the camera. Dry ice gives the denser, whiter version of it. This one has a dedicated page as well, because the coverage and the timing matter more than the machine does.

Our CO2 guns and cannons create plumes of cold white smoke that shoot overhead and clear in seconds. Liquid CO2 travels from a tank through a hose to the nozzle, and the pressure drop at the nozzle flashes it into vapor and ice crystals. That is what you see: a bright white column that reads as an explosion on camera and disappears before the next bar of the song.
We carry two of each shape, and they are used in two different ways. The two handheld CO2 guns go in your hands. We charge them, show you the trigger and stand close by, then the couple, the guest of honor or whoever you want holding them fires the plume where they want it, straight up over the dance floor or out across the crowd. Most of the best photographs we get all year come from that thirty seconds. The two mounted cannons are ours to run. They have LED lights in the head and sit on DMX with the rest of the lighting rig, so the plume comes out lit in a color, and a technician fires them from the board on cues the DJ calls and the timeline sets. That is what puts the blast on the drop, on the entrance or on the reveal instead of a second behind it.
The reason CO2 gets used indoors so freely is that the plume is cold and it leaves the room clean. The plume is cold, the floor stays dry and the room is clear afterwards, so it suits venues that hold a firm line on flame and residue. What it does need is height above the nozzle and a clear path for the plume, which we check when we walk the room.
We bring the CO2, set the tanks, run the hose so it stays out of the walkway, and stay with the rig for the length of the event. The cannons fire from our board on DMX, cued off the DJ and the run of show. The handhelds are yours for the moment you want them, with our technician on them either side of the hit, loading, checking pressure and taking them back afterwards. When we are running your audio and lighting as well, the cannon cue is shared across the room, so the blast, the light and the drop land as one thing.
Club nights and raves
Repeat hits through a set, timed against the lighting and the drops. The cannons fire on cue from the board all night, and the handhelds get passed to whoever is on the floor when the room is peaking.
Grand entrances
The two cannons sit either side of the doorway and fire as the doors open, so the room sees the entrance arrive through a white column of vapor. Plenty of couples then take a handheld gun each and hit the floor with it.

A product, a logo or a keynote speaker arriving on a cue. CO2 gives a general session a visual moment that photographs well and leaves the ballroom floor dry.

Cold spark machines create cascades of silver sparks that rise several feet and fall away, and they do it at a temperature low enough that many venues allow them where real pyrotechnics are refused. Guests read the effect as fireworks indoors. Photographers love it because the sparks light faces from below while the couple stays in focus.
These are the machines people are describing when they ask about sparklers for a first dance, cold sparklers for a wedding, or spark fountains for a stage entrance. Placement, the safe distance to the nearest guest and clearance overhead all get agreed with your venue before the date instead of worked out on the night.
Lead time Permit approval takes 4 to 6 weeks · book cold sparks first
Cold sparks are handled as a permitted effect. A licensed pyrotechnician operates the machines at your event, and the permit has to be approved by the authority having jurisdiction over your venue before we can fire them. That approval runs four to six weeks, so cold sparks are the first thing to lock in on a date, ahead of every other extra on this page. Tell us the venue and the date early and we start the paperwork the same week. If your date is inside that window, say so anyway and we will tell you honestly whether it can still be permitted in time, and what the alternatives are for the date.
Lasers: beams and shapes across the whole room.
A laser rig draws hard edged beams, fans and shapes through the air, and one position can cover an entire ballroom. Because a laser beam is only visible where it hits something, we run lasers through haze so the beams read across the room instead of only at the wall. Aiming, safe zones above head height and the operating position are set during load in and held for the night.

Fog and haze: the air that makes every other effect visible.
Haze is a thin suspension you barely notice until a beam passes through it, and then every moving head, pin spot and laser in the room reads as a shaft of light. High density fog does the opposite job. It is a heavy white burst you use as one moment, usually behind a doorway for a grand entrance, and it clears within a minute.
Because haze is what lets lasers and beam fixtures exist in the air, it gets added to most effects packages by default. Dancing on the clouds: low-lying fog for a first dance.
Low-lying fog is chilled so it hangs at ankle height across the dance floor instead of rising, which gives you the dancing on the clouds look: a couple standing on a white cloud with faces clear above it. Dry ice produces the denser, whiter version and has been the theatrical standard for decades; a water based machine gives you a continuous cloud on fluid alone.
How much floor a cloud covers, how long it holds and how it is timed against the song matter more here than the machine does, which is why the clouds effect keeps a page to itself.

Every venue has rules about effects, and we settle them in advance.
Special effects are the part of an event most likely to run into a house rule, and finding that out on the day is expensive. So before your date we take the venue name, contact the room, and agree what is allowed, where the rig sits and what paperwork they want. Most rooms in the Metroplex we have worked before, so the answer usually comes back the same week.
Detectors and alarm monitoring
Fog and haze can trigger smoke detectors, so we clear the effect with the venue and with the alarm monitoring company where there is one, and place machines away from detectors and return vents.
Ceiling height and clearance
CO2 plumes and spark fountains both need room above the nozzle. We measure the height over the exact spot the effect fires from, because that is the number that governs the plume.
Floor plan and safe distance
Where guests stand, where the cake table sits and how far the nearest chair is all shape the placement. That plan goes to the venue before load in.
Overhead rigging and drapery
Drape, greenery, chandeliers and low truss all change what an effect can do underneath them. We look up during the walk through, not during the reception.
Permits, licensing and insurance
Cold sparks are permitted and fired by a licensed pyrotechnician, and permit approval runs four to six weeks. Every rental carries full insurance, with a certificate for your venue whenever they ask for one, supplied ahead of load in.
Power and cable paths
Effects share circuits with audio and lighting, so we plan the power draw and run hose and cable clear of every guest path.
