Festivals, concerts and large outdoor events. Two cabinets a side is the top of the stack, so past a certain depth of field the answer is a delay position further into the crowd rather than more boxes on the stand. At this size we want to walk the site or review a venue plan before we quote it, because the depth of the field and the sight lines decide the design.

An outdoor show has open air on every side, so everything the audience hears comes straight out of the boxes. Outdoor events get a bigger system than the same headcount indoors, plus a power plan, and ballast on the stands when the wind picks up.

Gymnasiums, atriums, hard-surfaced ballrooms and any venue with a balcony. These are the rooms where a pair of speakers on sticks turns into an echo, and where being able to angle each cabinet independently is the whole point of bringing an array.
What is a line array PA system?
A line array is a column of matched cabinets stacked in a vertical line so their outputs couple into one source instead of fighting each other. A traditional point-source system loses about 6 dB every time you double the distance from the speaker, which is why the front rows get blasted and the back of the room gets mush. A line array cuts that loss across its usable range, so the first row and the last row hear something much closer to the same thing.
The column is aimed as a unit, at the audience and away from the ceiling, the back wall and the glass. In a reflective venue such as a gymnasium, an atrium or a hard-surfaced ballroom, that directivity is what keeps a presenter intelligible instead of washing the room in reflections.
The working rule we use: below about 250 guests in a normal room, a point-source PA is the right tool. Above that, or outdoors, or in a long room, an array is what keeps every seat sounding the same.

Every line array rental we send out is built on BassBoss DV12 powered cabinets. Amplification and processing live inside the box, which matters more on a rental than it sounds. The tuning travels with the cabinet, so what arrives at your venue is the system we tested, and there is one less rack on the truck.
Each box carries a twelve inch woofer and a compression driver on a waveguide, 3,200 watts of onboard amplification, and a 120 degree horizontal pattern that is deliberately narrow vertically. That narrow vertical is the whole point. It keeps the energy on the audience and off the ceiling, which is what makes a presenter intelligible in a hard-surfaced ballroom.
The DV12 and our BassBoss subwoofers come from the same company and are voiced to work as one system, which is why we rent them together. The crossover between the tops and the sub array is a setting we already know rather than something we go looking for in your room on the day, so the low end lands under the vocal from the first song. Which subwoofer array goes under the line array
The tops are the same on every job. The subwoofers change. Which array we put under the DV12 comes down to what the music is, and it is the single decision that changes how the night feels on the floor. We carry both of these and we choose it at intake.
The subwoofers go on the floor in a block rather than spread along the stage, so the boxes couple with each other and the bass arrives at the audience as one source. Two a side under a DV12 array is the shape most Dallas-Fort Worth rooms get, and the count grows with the crowd and the genre.

For live bands, corporate general sessions and anything where speech has to stay intelligible, we run the SSP118 array. It is an eighteen inch cabinet from the same family as the tops, so the crossover is a known quantity rather than something we negotiate on site. It stays tight and fast under a kick drum and a bass guitar, and it stays out of the way of a presenter's voice.

The array goes up on stands, to thirteen feet

Height is the reason anyone puts an array in the air. Up at thirteen feet the boxes clear a standing crowd, the front row stops absorbing the whole system, and we can aim the pair at the back of the room on purpose. Our stands get the DV12 to that height on any flat floor.
This is why the date works. A stand needs a level floor and a power drop from the venue, so the date goes ahead on the floor alone, and the system is up inside the same load-in window in any room. Hotel ballrooms, historic venues, tents and open fields all take the same rig.
Your production manager still gets a certificate of insurance naming the venue, sent at intake rather than chased for on the Friday. We advance load in, power and curfew with the venue directly, so everyone knows the freight elevator plan before the truck arrives.

Outdoor stages in the open air
On an outdoor stage the rig has to do all the work on its own. A room gives you reflections that carry sound to the back for free, and a field gives you open air, so everything the audience hears has to be aimed there on purpose. That is what height and a narrow vertical pattern buy you, and it is why an outdoor event of 800 guests can need more system than an indoor event of 1,500.
The sub array grows outdoors
A crowd absorbs low end and a field lets the rest roll away, so an outdoor show gets more subwoofers than the same head count indoors. We size the BassBoss array against the crowd and the genre rather than the square footage, and we arrange the boxes so the bass lands on the audience instead of on the back of the stage.
Delay towers and front fill
Past a certain depth from the stage, one pair of mains serves the front better than the back. Delay towers put a second source further into the crowd, time aligned so it reinforces the main array instead of smearing it, and front fill covers the guests standing closer than the array is aimed. Both are how a big field stays even.
Multiple acts sharing one rig
Support acts, a changeover and a headliner all play through the same array, and the array stays where it was tuned. Our engineer holds the system at the level the room was set for across the whole bill, so the last act on stage gets the same coverage the first one had.

A spare cabinet and spare amp modules travel with the system. Every DV12 carries its amplification inside the box, so if a box ever needs attention it is a swap our engineer makes between songs, with the rest of the array still running. That redundancy is the reason we keep an engineer on every array we send out.
