Fog covers three separate machines. A hazer makes your lighting beams visible, a high output fogger fills a room on a drop, and a low-lying machine lays a cloud across the dance floor. Getting that choice right is most of what this page is for, so here is the difference in plain terms.
Haze: beams you can see

Haze is a thin, even suspension that makes light visible. On its own you barely notice it. The moment a moving head, a gobo wash, a pin spot on the cake table or a laser fires through it, every beam reads as a solid shaft of light. Haze is what makes a lighting package photograph the way it looked in the proposal, and guests read it as atmosphere rather than smoke.
Best for Ballrooms, chapels, corporate general sessions, and any room where lasers or moving heads are in the rig.
High density fog: a moment on a cue
Machine Froggy’s Fog Titan 1200 · 1,300 W · variable output
High density fog works the other way around. It is a heavy, opaque burst you use as a single moment: a grand entrance, a DJ drop, a first look, a Halloween walk through, or a photo and video setup that needs the background gone. It rolls in thick, does its job and clears.
Best for Grand entrances, club nights, Halloween events, concert sets and camera work.
Low-lying fog: a cloud on the floor

Low-lying fog stays on the floor. It is the dancing on the clouds look, a knee deep cloud that hangs across the dance floor for a first dance or a quinceañera waltz, with the couple standing above it. That machine has a page of its own, and this page carries the rest of the fog and haze inventory.
Best for First dances, quinceañera waltzes, theatrical reveals and anything photographed close to the ground.

A grand entrance is what most people are picturing when they search for a fog machine rental for a wedding, and it is worth being clear about which machine gives you the shot you have in your head, because two very different looks get called the same thing. A high density fog burst behind a doorway gives you the silhouette. The wedding party walks out of a wall of white, the room sees them the moment they step through it, and the fog clears within a minute. A low-lying cloud on the floor gives you the walking on air version instead, where the fog holds at ankle height and every face stays clear for the camera.
Which one your venue allows and which one your photographer wants are the two questions worth settling early. Haze machine rental: Chauvet Hurricane Haze 2D and 4D.

Both of our hazers are water based and run Chauvet High Performance Haze Fluid (HFG), which Chauvet describes as non toxic, non flammable and unscented, and which will not stain fabric or leave residue on a dance floor.
The Hurricane Haze 2D puts out 1,200 cfm from a 0.7 gallon tank, heats up in about five minutes, draws 533 W and gives you two channels of DMX over 3 pin XLR. It ships with a digital display and a 15 foot wired timer remote. At 18.7 lb it is the right hazer for a ballroom, a chapel or a corporate general session, where you want the beams visible while the room still reads clear to the eye.
The Hurricane Haze 4D is the larger machine: 4,300 cfm, a 0.9 gallon tank, a two minute heat up, 1,120 W and the same two DMX channels. Use it when the room is big, the ceiling is high, or the HVAC is strong enough to eat the output of a smaller hazer.
Because both are DMX addressable, they run from the same console as your lighting and hold the haze at one set density all night instead of chasing it with bursts. That is also why a haze machine rental and a lighting package quote well together.
High density fog: the Froggy’s Fog Titan 1200.

The Titan 1200 is our burst machine: 1,300 W, a five-liter drop in reservoir, roughly a four minute heat up, and a reheat time Froggy’s rates at under ten seconds after a full cycle, which is what lets it hit repeatedly through a set instead of dying after the first blast. Output is variable from 0 to 100 percent and it runs from a wired remote, an optional wireless remote or a built in timer.
We pair it with Froggy’s Fog Bog Fog extreme high density fluid. It is water based, made from deionized water and pharmaceutical grade, FDA approved ingredients, glycerol free, and it produces a very white, very dense fog with a high index of refraction and a slow evaporation rate. That is the fluid you want for a white out effect, for hiding scenic elements, for strobe work and for camera work.
Bog Fog is dense, and that is the point of it. It suits a concert, a club night, a Halloween event or a shoot, and it is usually too much for a plated dinner in a hotel ballroom. Grand entrance
A wall of white behind a doorway, fired on the cue and cleared within a minute so the room sees the wedding party or the keynote arrive out of it.

Low-lying fog and dry ice: dancing on the clouds.
Low-lying fog is a cloud that stays on the floor instead of rising, and two machines produce it. The Chauvet DJ Cumulus makes the effect on water alone, using an onboard ultrasonic agitator to turn distilled water into a fine mist that chills the fog so it hugs the floor. The ADJ Entour Ice is the theatrical version, dropping dry ice into heated water the way stage productions have done it for decades, built as a wheeled, insulated, DMX controllable machine.
Dry ice fog reads denser, whiter and colder than the water based version, and it hugs the floor harder, which is why it is still the standard for a first dance, a quinceañera waltz or a theatrical reveal photographed close to the ground. Dry ice has to be sourced fresh on the day and handled safely, and that part is ours.

Fog machines and smoke detectors: what we clear with your venue.
Every manufacturer of every fog and haze machine, Chauvet included, states in the manual that atmospheric effects can set off smoke detectors, and every machine needs clearance around it for ventilation. So before your date we clear the effect with your venue and, where one is involved, the alarm monitoring company, and we place the machines where the output stays away from a detector or a return vent.
That conversation is a routine part of the booking, and it is one of the reasons our own crew delivers and places every machine. It is also why we ask for the venue name early: we have worked most rooms in the Metroplex before, and we usually know their rules on haze already.
